Getting to placements
Driving licence requirement
Trainees must have access to their own means of travel as the programme cannot ensure placements without travel requirements, and placements may be in hard to reach areas.

Right to work and fee status
Applicants must have the unrestricted right to reside, study, train and work in the UK.
The programme does not accept applications from self-funding applicants.

GBC when you apply
All applicants must be eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society. We do not accept applications from anyone who has not completed their undergraduate studies.

DegreeOur summary: A lower second (2:2): With clear and substantial evidence that the degree result does not reflect your academic ability.
Candidates with a 2:2 honours degree in psychology or a conversion degree pass and GBC are also eligible to apply. However, this needs to be accompanied by clear and substantial evidence that the degree outcome is not an accurate reflection of the applicant's true academic ability.

Minimum requirement of one-year whole-time paid experience which meets at least one of the below criteria (by the time of application):
24 months paid contact with relevant clinical populations
1 year Assistant Psychology (AP) post (or equivalent)
1 year other qualified professional role (e.g. OT, Social Worker)

English language
The minimum scores needed are: 100 for internet-based TOEFL, 600 for paper-based TOEFL or 7.0 for IELTS with no element below 6.5.

Earlier NHS-funded training
Candidates who have completed other NHS England funded training in the previous two years will not be eligible to apply due to funding issues.

Other study
Applicants accepted onto the programme who are registered for a higher degree such as an MSc, MPhil or PhD (or equivalent) will be expected to have submitted their thesis by the end of August 2027, although any viva voce examinations can take place after this date.

Face to face only. The course states remote interviews are not available because face-to-face interaction is a core skill it selects for. In 2026, candidates were asked questions on clinical, research and academic knowledge and on interpersonal and communication skills, plus questions relating to a short video of a clinical scenario shown on the day. For 2027 the course says candidates will be told the format well in advance, and that it “may include research and/or clinically related activities in addition to a structured interview”.

Several, older: 2 accounts
Two invitees in older cycles said their invitation letters included a presentation. One described 50 minutes to prepare a 10-minute talk on a research report given on the day, with questions, followed by a separate general interview. No recent account confirms this.
