Acceptance into the University of Leeds scheme requires that a person should have a degree in Psychology recognised by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as meeting Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) standards at 2:1 or 1st class level.

All trainees accepted onto the Programme will have had a minimum of 12 months full-time (or equivalent) recent experience in two or more distinct fields relevant to clinical psychology. For the purpose of the application "recent" means in the last five years.

The course says: “Selection is by application and interview only; we have no plans to introduce any extra tests at screening, short-listing, or interview stages.” Three people are interviewed per place.

Two panels, with one question a week in advance for the panel of psychologists and a topic supplied a week in advance for a brief spoken presentation to people with experience of services. The psychologists, academic and clinical, then ask about clinical work, research and critical appraisal, and personal, professional and social awareness. The second panel is up to three people with experience of services as service users or carers, and the presentation is informal.

Accounts conflict on how much the service user panel's view counts. One candidate felt it carried little weight; another poster said it is weighed heavily and can override the psychologist panel.
