DegreeOur summary: A lower second (2:2): Welcomes a 2:1 or above. Says nothing about a 2:2.
At the point of application, a candidate should hold a:
GBC-accredited honours degree with a mean percentage mark of at least 61 in the final two academic years FTE
OR
GBC-accredited MSc conversion degree in psychology with a mean percentage mark of at least 61
OR
GBC-accredited higher diploma conversion in psychology, at 2:1 equivalent level or above, with 240 credit equivalent (120 ECTS), where the overall number of research credits is at least 80 (40 ECTS)

ExperienceOur summary: No minimum set. Some must be paid.
However, whilst voluntary experience may contribute, candidates must have had at least some time in a relevant paid position.
Experience working within a setting with populations experiencing mental health problems or disabilities is essential.

English language
International applicants whose first language is not English, are required to demonstrate their proficiency in English via the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) prior to appointment. A score of 7.0 or higher must be achieved, with no element of the test falling below 6.5.

Earlier NHS-funded training
Where a candidate has previously received, or is currently in receipt of funding for any of the above programmes, that candidate will normally not be eligible to receive funding for the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology until a minimum of 18 months after the award for the previous training is recommended by a qualifying examination board or by chair’s action after the qualifying exam board (or achieved by other recognised route).

A role-play with an actor or panel member and a panel interview.

A structured role-play scenario depicting a work-based situation involving an interaction with a colleague, conducted remotely on MSTeams in the weeks before interview, with actors experienced in working with students at the University's College of Medicine. Assessed by up to three trained assessors, normally including at least one clinical psychologist and one expert by experience. It assesses interpersonal and reflective skills. The interview is also remote: "Both are conducted remotely using MSTeams." Interview structure and duration are "currently under review".

In the 2026 selection cycle the course says interviews were "a single meeting of 60 minutes duration" with a panel of academic and clinical representatives, questions given verbally and in writing.

What your form is rated on
Panellists rate each application independently using standardised scoring criteria. On the basis of candidates' applications, the short-listing panel considers:
- Evidence of academic strength
- Evidence of strength in research
- Exposure to experience in relevant settings
- Approach to professional issues
- Values and ethics
Based on these criteria we assess candidates' overall readiness for training in clinical psychology.

Several, older: 8 accounts
In 2011, applicants described separate clinical and research panels, plus an actor role-play followed by a debrief with current trainees. The role-play was a pilot and was not used in selection that year.

In 2011, several applicants found the clinical panel's questions long, multi-part and hard to hold in mind, and the clinical panel harder than the research panel. Most found the research panel manageable.
