DegreeOur summary: A lower second (2:2): With a research master’s at merit or distinction, a PhD or a DPhil, or without a master’s if you meet its contextual admissions criteria.
1st class or 2:1 psychology degree
2:2 undergraduate psychology degree plus a research Masters (a course that requires completion of a research dissertation) awarded at Merit or Distinction, or a DPhil, or a PhD.
2:2 without a Masters if one of the Contextual Admissions criteria is met (see contextual admissions questionnaire within your Application).

English language
The English language ability requirement for entry to the programme is a score of at least 7.0 with no elements below 6.5 on International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet Based Test (IBT) with a minimum score of 100/120 (Health & Care Professions Council Standard of Proficiency).

Earlier NHS-funded training
If you entered an HEE funded training from April 2022, you will not be eligible to receive NHS funding for a subsequent psychological professions training, such as the DClinPsy programme, until a minimum of 2 years after you completed the previous training (see HEE Psychological Professions Funding for more information).

For this cycle, the Clearing House short-listing list, updated 7 September 2026, gives Exeter's test as “questionnaires which are not timed”.
More about the test
The course's Clearing House entry, updated 8 October 2026, describes “a two-stage short-listing process” and says “We may invite you take part in an additional task to inform the first stage of short-listing.” Scores from the first round are rank-ordered, and the top 50% go to a second stage, where short-listing panels review the forms. Casper comes a cycle later. Under “Shortlisting procedure to be introduced in 2027/28”, the course's own page says “All applicants are required to complete Casper as part of their application for the 2027/28 admissions cycle”, calls Casper “an online, open-response situational judgment test, SJT, that takes 65-85 minutes to complete”, and gives the last test date as “early February 2028”.

Several stages, each with a different panel, covering research knowledge and ability, clinical knowledge and ability, and readiness for training. The Clearing House entry says the stages are on the same day with a break, and that “You may be asked to work in a group to discuss a clinically relevant issue.” The course's own page says stages “may be held on different dates”, and that any preparatory tasks “may include written, verbal, practical, individual, or group-based tasks”. Both say interviews are normally online, on Microsoft Teams.

A note on this record
The course's own page now describes its short-listing for the next cycle, which this site reads as 2028 entry, and no longer describes this cycle's first stage, so this record follows the Clearing House list. That page also says “All applications must be sent to the Clearing House by 1pm on the 19 November for September 2026 start” and “Applications close 19 November 2026”; the Clearing House says the closing date is 1:00 pm on 18 November 2026, and this site follows the Clearing House. From 10 to 16 October 2026 this record said Exeter sets Casper this cycle, quoting the page as naming “the 2026/27 admissions cycle” and a last test date in early February 2027.
